Caldwell third and fourth grade science students will be embarking on an exciting project when they return to school this fall: growing green – algae that is.
With assistance from the Alternate Energy Task Force and their teacher, Gail Feely, the students will be involved in building a photo bioreactor and growing algae in the classroom. They will learn about photosynthesis and how the oil of algae can be used to create biodiesel.
“My students will learn that our world must find alternate energy sources. My students will learn about algae as a unicellular living organism and also as an alternate energy source,” stated Gail Feely. “I think this will be an amazing experience for my students as well as the local team. It will be a trial and error project to find ideal growing conditions to reproduce algae. Volunteers from the local research team on growing algae will be our main resource who will lead us in this endeavor.
Funding for the project will come in part from grants and donations from the Alternate Energy Task Force. You can help with one of the grants by voting at http://www.weareteachers.com/web/745251/micrograntand follow the directions there. Search Gail Feely. VOTE BEFORE JUNE 17TH !
